How to Replace Powerbook G4 Keyboard

Replacing a PowerBook G4 keyboard is necessary if the original keyboard no longer works, or if you want to replace the old keyboard with one that is free of imperfections. Although changing the keyboard on a laptop seems like a daunting task, the procedure on a PowerBook G4 is straightforward. Before replacing the keyboard on your PowerBook G4, hold the replacement keyboard near the one installed in your PowerBook to verify it is the right model.

Instructions

    1

Click the “Apple” menu on your PowerBook G4, and select “Shut Down” to turn it off.

    2

Put the computer on a flat and clean surface to prevent scratching its outside case.

    3

Disconnect all cables connected to the PowerBook, including the power cable, and turn it over.

    4

Remove the battery by sliding the battery latch to the right to unlock it, and pull the battery from its socket. Once removed, turn the computer right-side up.

    5

Press the latch to open the display, and raise it until it is perpendicular with the keyboard so you have adequate space to swap the keyboards.

    6

Loosen the keyboard locking screw one-half turn counter-clockwise using a jeweler’s screwdriver to unlock the keyboard. If the screw does not move under slight force, it means the keyboard is already unlocked.

    7

Pull down on the two keyboard release tabs located on the left side of the F1 and F12 keys, respectively, to unseat the keyboard. Lift the keyboard up slightly so it comes unlatched.

    8

Flip the keyboard over so that it rests on top of the trackpad and palm rests. Touch the inside of the computer after removing the keyboard. This discharges static electricity.

    9

Pull upward on the keyboard connector cable to disconnect it. You may need to wiggle it from side to side to break the connector loose. Set the old keyboard aside. The connector that must be removed is on the computer’s logic board, not on the keyboard itself.

    10

Set the new keyboard over the keyboard opening to verify it is the right size, and then flip it over face down in the correct orientation on the palm rests.

    11

Push the keyboard cable into the connector inside the PowerBook G4.

    12

Flip the keyboard over so that it is sitting above its opening in the PowerBook case.

    13

Hold the bottom of the keyboard at an angle so that you may move the top edge of the keyboard downward to lock it in place.

    14

Pull the keyboard release tabs down and push down on the top of the keyboard to seat it in the PowerBook G4 frame. Release the clips, and let them move forward to lock the replacement keyboard in place.

    15

Close the display lid and turn the PowerBook G4 over.

    16

Reinstall the battery and turn the computer back over.

    17

Connect the power adapter and other accessory cables before pressing the power button to test the function of the new keyboard.
